Well, it’s finally here….my Reading Interactive Notebooks!  Honestly, I started making these in July, Science Interactive Notebooks, but I was all notebooked out and needed a break.  This long Labor Day weekend really allowed me to put the final touches on it and get it posted.

Engage students in their reading with these reading interactive notebooks. You can use them with ANY book!

What are Interactive Notebooks?

They are notebooks or binders that holds the personal interactions, learnings and thoughts of a student or reader about the book or classroom material they are reading. with a reading text.

It’s much like a textbook, but created by the students.

Interactive Notebooks allows the students to document their own learning and reading experiences.

They allow students to watch his/her learning progress overtime while practicing organization and notetaking skills.

Are Interactive Notebooks Worth It?

This notebook provides an easy way to engage and assess your students and accommodate students at various learning stages. But, so many teachers are often turned off by all that cutting, coloring and gluing. So, here are a few good reasons why they are so worth it.

1. The Interaction:

Pretty basic. But the number one reasons your students love interactive notebooks is because they are INTERACTIVE. Students can interact with the content in numerous ways, depending on the activities you choose to use and how they use it.

2. Interactive Notebooks are great for Kinesthetic Learners

While interactive notebooks accommodate students with different learning styles, they are specifically great for the kinesthetic learners in your classroom. The ability to physically manipulate the paper to complete the activities solidifies learning for them.

3. Interactive Notebooks Teach Students to Organize their Thoughts.

Interactive notebooks not only give students the ability to show exactly where they are in their understanding of the subject, it allows you to work with your students to create a process for them to organize their thoughts. This way, you’re able to teach study skills without “teaching” them.

4. It Help Kids Understand the Subject Better

Interactive notebooks are creative, fun, and memorable. They require students to create, interact with, manipulate, and think about new skills as they complete each activity.

Students may not remember what they read in a book traditionally, but they will remember the creative ways they expressed their thoughts in their notebooks. This leads to deeper understanding and give students the ability to show exactly where they are in their understanding of the subject.

5. Builds and Strengthen Student-teacher-parent interaction

When students are working on their homework at home with their interactive notebooks, not only does it help enhance the deepen the students learning and interest, but parents will also be able to have a resource and a deeper insight into the learning that is taking place in the classroom.

How To Use Interactive Notebooks

1. Use with Foldable Templates

Foldable activities are so much fun! They allow the students to fill in information, cut/fold in a fun way, and glue into their notebooks for future reference.

My Science interactive templates includes foldable templates.

2. Use Interactive Notebook for Note Taking

When we write things down, we’re taking a longer time to process the information, This allows the information to be cemented in our brains.

Interactive notetaking takes a longer time than regular note taking as students process, question, observe, and interact with the subject in a deeper and more creative way. Interactive note taking improves the students ability to correctly recall information.

3. Use it for Journaling and Planning

Students can use their interactive notebooks as journals and for planning projects, to write about anything that may or be related to their class work. They can write about what they’ve learned during the week, challenges encountered etc.

This practice allows your students to look back throughout the year and see how much they’ve learned and grown.
